Information/Communication and Media

The exchange of knowledge and information enjoys a great degree of importance in the global world. The media landscape plays a central role hereby with regard to the transportation of information but also for the orientation within the flood of information. Media create networks and at the same time create world-wide publicity. For a modern and knowledge-based industrial and service society a highly-developed media society is an absolute must.

The Munich Metropolitan Region is considered the no. 1 address for both the Information/Communication and the media industry in Germany. In the European and international rankings the region is also to be found among the leading contenders. Within the region itself, the conurbations of Munich and Augsburg are the leaders. Many major and renowned soft- and hardware companies and telecommunication firms have their domiciles here. As a media location, the region excels in particular due to its quality, diversity and a high technological standard. From the printing sector, comprising printing and publishing, via television and radio through to the internet and multi-media, the region is in an excellent position.

More than 5,000 media companies and more than 20,000 companies from the information and communications branch have settled in the Munich Metropolitan Region. The spectrum covers, among other things, software, advertising, journalism, publishing, cable and network operators, components, terminal equipment and distribution. More than 240,000 employees of the IaC and media industries generate each year a turnover in excess of 70 thousand million euros.

Many research and development projects have close connections to research facilities, universities and institutes of higher education, such as the Fraunhofer Institute for systems of communication technology, or the college for television and film. The numerous courses of study in the fields of informatics and electrotechnology as well as in journalism and media sciences on offer at the colleges and universities will ensure a highly qualified and motivated young workforce in the future.
