The aerospace and satellite navigation industries number among the most important engines of innovation for the economy in the Munich Metropolitan Region.

Airbus Group, Airbus Defense & Space, Airbus Helicopters, MTU Aero Engines and Premium Aerotec are just a few of the major global players based in the Munich Metropolitan Region. Their activities focus on building aircraft engines, helicopters and military aircraft, as well as landing gear and components for spacecraft and satellites.

Galileo is one of the European Union's three stand-out aerospace projects, alongside Airbus in the aircraft market and Ariane for space travel. The Munich Metropolitan Region is one of the venues selected for Galileo, which also benefits many other suppliers of components and software, as well as developers of new application-specific products and services.



The aerospace research infrastructure in the Munich Metropolitan Region is regarded as first class. The region is, for example, home to the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the European Southern Observatory and the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics. Universities in the region also provide young talent with an outstanding spectrum of study courses, guaranteeing a steady of stream of highly specialized labor.
