Automotive engineering

A unique ecosystem of large car makers, supply firms and research and development organizations singles out the Munich Metropolitan Region as one of the world's leading automotive hubs. The importance of automotive engineering to this region is also reflected in the large number of employees and patent applications in the automotive sector.

One major strength of the region's automotive sector is its extensive network of suppliers and research organizations. All in all, around 1,000 small, medium-sized and large automotive firms (including Audi, BMW and MAN) and supplier operations are based in the Munich Metropolitan Region. Some resident suppliers are global players in their own right, and they rub shoulders with leading international providers of specialized technologies (such as W.E.T. Automotive Systems and Webasto) as well as top research and development institutes. Taken together, these automotive players generate revenues of approximately 80 billion euros a year – about 80 percent of Bavaria's total automotive revenues.

Cooperation between industrial companies and the scientific community is especially important in automotive engineering. Cross-industry cooperation (with environmental technology firms, for example) and intensive collaboration with universities in the region (such as the Ingolstadt Institutes of the Technical University of Munich) complete the picture of a muscular automotive sector. The finishing touches are added by premier events and trade fairs such as Automatica and Productronica.
