The Munich Metropolitan Region hosts one of German's biggest chemical clusters, with a strong focus on pharmaceuticals, primary plastics, paints and lacquers, body care agents and chemical fibers.
Global players such as Wacker and OMV Deutschland combine with a large number of medium-sized companies to underscore the international significance of the region's chemical industry. Within the Munich Metropolitan Region, the industry is most heavily concentrated in what is known as Bavaria's "chemical triangle", which takes in large swathes of the county of Altötting, part of the county of Mühldorf/Inn and the northern part of the county of Traunstein.
In this sub-region alone, around 30 chemical companies employ 25,000 people and generate annual revenues of about eight billion euros.
At the same time, new regional hubs of innovation such as the various universities' research centers and TUM's Garching Research Center highlight the singular diversity of companies and research organizations based in the Munich Metropolitan Region.
