The Augsburg-based Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastics Technology Center, for instance, hosts collaborative efforts involving various Fraunhofer Society research institutes, DLR and the universities together with globally respected and forward-looking engineering and automotive companies.

The Munich Metropolitan Region is one of Germany's front-running locations for nanotechnology. Painstaking basic research in nanotechnology is conducted not only by the region's universities, but also – in a very active role – by research organizations such as the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration. Within the overall research landscape, a total of 24 university-based and eight non-university research facilities maintain excellent network links to around 100 companies.

Projects focused on the processing and manufacture of carbon fiber-reinforced compounds are complemented by training and development offerings tailored to new CFRP career profiles.

The regional MAI Carbon cluster brings together more than 50 companies, service providers, research institutes and universities in the Munich Metropolitan Region. These organizations share the goal of establishing the region as a European center of excellence for lightweight CFRP construction.
