County of Dachau

The palace gardens at Schloss Dachau lie three meters above the ground level of Munich's Marienplatz and hence command a panoramic view across the Bavarian capital to the Alps. The county of Dachau is situated to the northwest of Munich, in the heart of the metropolitan region.

The 580 km² county is home to around 143,000 people. The history of the city of Dachau goes back more than 1,200 years. Around 800,000 people a year visit the Dachau Concentration Camp memorial site, which describes and explains the National Socialist past. The city is open and transparent about the image it acquired from recent history and has become a place of learning and remembrance. Dachau's youth hostel too supports the provision of historic/political background information to visitors.

Dachau's hilly countryside on the edge of Munich's alluvial plain is a popular venue for hikers and cyclists. The websites maintained by local communities and the County Administration Office provide information and suggestions for a number of tours (, in German only), as well as detailing links to the network of cycle paths that fan out into other regions. Several golf courses are in close proximity to the county of Dachau, and swimmable lakes are also popular among day-trippers.

Dachau has been home to a famous artists' colony since the start of the 20th century, and many artists still live here to this day. The county's cultural program is known far and wide, including an annual "music summer" festival and concerts at the Baroque palace. A number of the county's communities are themselves very active in the cultural scene. Countless castles, palaces and churches can be found in the Dachau region (, in German only).

The county's unusually favorable location with regard to traffic connections is one reason for the region's forceful economic upswing. Munich's Marienplatz is a mere 13 kilometers from the southern boundary of the county of Dachau. The county itself is located between freeways that approach the Bavarian capital in a kind of funnel shape: the A8 (Stuttgart-Munich) to the west, the A9 (Nuremberg-Munich) to the east, the A92 (Munich-Deggendorf) to the east and the A99 ring freeway to the south.

Hinzu kommen zwei Bahnstrecken.
