Environmental technology

The Munich metropolitan region is a leading hub for environmental technology, bringing together innovative companies, scientific excellence, and regional centers of expertise to develop solutions for climate protection, resource efficiency, and sustainable business practices.

Environmental technology

  • In the Munich metropolitan region, the main areas of focus in environmental technology are water and wastewater treatment, air pollution control, waste and recycling management, and energy generation from solar, hydro, biomass, and geothermal sources.

  • As an official environmental competence center in Bavaria, the Augsburg region—with around 300 companies—is a leading location for the development of environmental technologies in Germany and is characterized by an exceptional concentration of expertise. It is no coincidence that the Competence Center for the Environment (KUMAS), the Bavarian network for growing environmental expertise, is based in Augsburg as the point of contact for the entire state.

Other areas of expertise include:

  • environmental education

  • the sciences of environmental economics and a sustainable economy

  • environmental medicine and biotechnology

  • the renewable energy sector

Energy Technology

  • Hydropower currently accounts for the largest share of electricity generation from renewable energy sources. However, biomass, solar power, wind power, and geothermal energy are also being used to an increasing extent. For example, about half of the solar power generated in Germany comes from the Munich metropolitan region.

  • Power plant manufacturers in the Munich metropolitan region: Siemens Power Generation, MTU Aero Engines, Linde, Kraftanlagen München, and many more.

  • Suppliers and major solar cell and silicon producers: AVANCIS GmbH & Co. KG, CENTROSOLAR Group AG, SolarTec AG, Wacker Chemie GmbH, and many more.
