Mobility in the region

Mobility in the Munich metropolitan region is focused on improving connections between the city and its surrounding areas, with the goal of ensuring accessibility, quality of life, and balanced regional economic development through sustainable, innovative, and coordinated transportation solutions.

The Munich metropolitan region is currently experiencing very strong population growth and faces the major challenge of managing this growth in a sustainable manner and, in particular, effectively addressing the increased demand for mobility.

To achieve this, transportation systems must be adapted to the new conditions. This can be accomplished primarily through better integration of the various services.

EMM e. V. aims to facilitate knowledge transfer and learning by connecting relevant stakeholders, thereby contributing to more efficient project implementation. This is achieved through joint projects such as a unified public transit fare system for the Munich metropolitan region or specialized conferences on topics like e-mobility and shared mobility.

On these pages, you can learn about the diverse activities of EMM e. V. in the field of mobility. If you have any questions, project proposals, or other suggestions, please feel free to contact us!

Cycling is good for your health and the environment! With the RegioCity Green Routes, you can take advantage of specially selected bike routes that mostly lead away from major thoroughfares, offering a stress-free, eco-friendly, and peaceful journey from the surrounding areas into downtown Munich. There are now 42 routes leading into the city from the west, south, north, and east! The RegioCity Green Routes are particularly aimed at commuters who want to leave their cars at home more often and use a bike instead. The RegioCity Green Routes are a joint initiative of ADFC Bavaria, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Munich and Upper Bavaria, MVV – Munich Transport and Tariff Association, and EMM e.V.

Green Cycling Routes West:

You can also find an overview of the western Green Cycling Routes in a joint flyer from theDachauADFC district associations andFürstenfeldbruck EMM e.V. In addition to connecting to Munich’s city center, the routes described offer good connections to various long-distance cycling trails, such as the Ammer-Amper Trail. The individual Green Routes, which can also be combined with one another, pass by train stations in various locations where you can transfer to the S-Bahn or U-Bahn.

More and more people are commuting longer distances to work. In most cases, there is only one person in a car. These two factors lead to heavy traffic on the roads and, as a result, often to more traffic jams.

Public transit, car-sharing, bike-sharing—there are numerous sharing options in the Munich metropolitan area designed to ease mobility pressures. But how do car- and bike-sharing work in cities and rural areas in detail? What conditions must be in place for them to function? What role will newly registered e-scooters play in the future, and to what extent can ride-sharing and on-demand services serve as a meaningful complement to traditional public transit in rural areas? What options are available to employers?

EMM e. V. has addressed these questions and, together with Team Red Deutschland, has published a sharing handbook featuring selected services from the Munich metropolitan region.

You will also find a list of ride-sharing centers and car-sharing portals in the Munich metropolitan region below. In addition, the “Parking and Carpooling” flyer allows you to view all commuter parking lots in the Munich metropolitan region on a map and use this information when forming carpool groups. To help publicize these services in the region, feel free to download the “Fahrt Mehr Miteinander” postcard or order it from us by mail to distribute in your area. You are also welcome to embed it on your website!

The Munich Metropolitan Region’s appeal as a place to do business and live can only be secured through a functional, sustainable, and future-proof mobility system. Through its projects in this area, EMM e.V. makes a decisive contribution.
The Munich Metropolitan Region’s mobility database provides information on projects and concepts in the region’s counties and cities. Share ideas and network to learn from one another. Are you currently developing an innovative concept yourself? Then register for free in the database!

> Hier geht's zur Mobilitätsdatenbank

To further enhance the region’s appeal and launch an integrated, sustainable mobility concept in the future, EMM e.V. has commissioned Drees & Sommer and Hendricks & Schwartz to conduct a networking study that brings all these ideas together and connects stakeholders.

The COVID-19 pandemic has, in particular, changed the mobility habits of commuters. Working from home has become much more common, while business travel has declined significantly. This presents us with an opportunity to shape these habits in a way that is both long-term and sustainable. Corporate Mobility Management (CMM) can play a significant role in this.

This is also demonstrated by a survey conducted by B.A.U.M. Consult on behalf of EMM e. V., in which over 400 people participated.

For many stakeholders, CMM is gaining importance as a strategic topic for corporate development, yet knowledge about potential projects is often still insufficient.

For this reason, EMM e. V. plans to expand its mobility database to include a wide range of Corporate Mobility Management projects, in order to provide transparency regarding which projects are already available today and worth implementing.
