IT & Media

The Munich metropolitan area is a leading hub for the information, communications (ICT), and media industries in Europe. The cultural and creative industries (CCI), which by definition overlap with the ICT sector, also play a prominent role in the region.

Information & Communication

Major industries and companies in the Munich metropolitan area:

  • Software and hardware companies (e.g., Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Intel, Adobe, Siemens, Infineon)

  • Telecommunications (e.g., Telefonica Germany GmbH & Co. OHG)

  • Printing, publishing, and media

  • Television and radio (e.g., Bayerischer Rundfunk, ProSiebenSat1 Media AG, Sky),

  • Film production and film industry (Bavaria Filmstudios, Arnold&Richter Cine Technik GmbH & Co. Betriebs KG, P+S Technik GmbH)

The 5,000 media companies and over 22,000 companies in the information and communications industry in the Munich metropolitan region span the sectors of software, advertising, journalism, publishing, cable and network operators, components, terminal equipment, and distribution. Over 240,000 employees in the ICT and media sectors generate more than 70 billion euros in revenue each year.

Cultural and Creative Industries

The cultural and creative industries make a significant contribution to the gross domestic product. As they constitute the third-largest economic sector, EMM e.V. commissioned a data report on the cultural and creative industries in the Munich Metropolitan Region in 2012 in cooperation with several partners; the results of this report even exceeded the expectations of the initiators and experts in terms of their clarity:

The cultural and creative industries in the metropolitan region comprise 117,000 employees, 29,000 companies, and €20 billion in annual revenue—meaning that 14.4% of Germany’s total cultural and creative industry output comes from the Munich metropolitan region.

To promote the positive development of the sector, the Cultural and Creative Industries Competence Team of the City of Munich has launched a crowdfunding platform. The #kreativmuenchen Crowdfunding platform raises greater awareness for crowdfunding projects in the cultural and creative industries initiated in Munich and the metropolitan region.
