Architectural Heritage

The Munich Metropolitan Region is known for a building culture that combines high-quality architecture, sustainable urban and community development, and social and spatial identity—a culture that is actively promoted through initiatives such as the Building Culture Award.

Architectural Award

Under the motto “Transformation with Quality,” the European Metropolitan Region of Munich Association, in cooperation with the Bavarian Chamber of Architects, the City of Munich, the Bavarian Association of Cities, the Bavarian Association of Municipalities, and the Federal Foundation for Building Culture, is presenting the Building Culture Award for the fourth time. The award is held under the patronage of Christian Bernreiter, MdL, Bavarian State Minister for Housing, Construction, and Transportation.

Embracing transformation positively and shaping it with quality—by awarding the Building Culture Prize, the EMM e.V. identifies exemplary construction projects from the region and presents them to a broad audience as part of the subsequent event series “Transformation with Quality” and the traveling exhibition. This raises awareness of architectural culture and fosters dialogue on the subject, with the aim of enhancing the quality of future construction projects in the region as well.

The 2025 Building Culture Award is jointly awarded to the projects “Redesign of Freising City Center” and “Comprehensive Renovation of the Asam Building.”

The next “Architectural Culture Award” will be announced at the end of 2026 and presented in 2027. Further information will follow shortly.

2025 Architecture Award

The European Metropolitan Region of Munich Association is jointly awarding the 2025 Building Culture Prize to the projects “Redesign of Freising’s City Center” and “Comprehensive Renovation of the Asam Building.” In cooperation with the Bavarian Chamber of Architects, the City of Munich, the Bavarian Association of Cities, and the Bavarian Association of Municipalities, as well as the Federal Foundation for Building Culture, and under the patronage of the Bavarian State Minister for Housing, Construction, and Transportation, Mr. Christian Bernreiter, MdL, the award is being presented for the fourth time.

Under the motto “Transformation with Quality, the 2025 Building Culture Award honors “mixed-use neighborhoods, city centers, and district centers” that contribute in a special way to the transformation and positive development of the metropolitan region. This has been achieved in a particularly successful manner in the city of Freising. The process of renovating the open spaces and buildings of the old town under public responsibility, the high quality of life, and the creation of a sense of identity appear to the jury to be particularly noteworthy and worthy of emulation, even from a sustainability perspective.

The traveling exhibition for the Building Culture Award can be borrowed through the EMM e.V. office. In addition, EMM e.V., in cooperation with the Regional Housing Conference, offers the free event series “Transformation with Quality.”

“Transformation with Quality” Event Series

To raise awareness of the topic of building culture, EMM e.V., in collaboration with the Regional Housing Conference, offers the “Transformation with Quality” event series directly on-site, for example at the award-winning projects of the Building Culture Award. Site visits, expert insights, and mutual exchange provide a behind-the-scenes look at the winning projects and offer information on the keys to success and the transferability of best-practice examples.

But even if you are not among the winners of the Prize for Building Culture, we would be happy to organize the event with you on-site, offering information and consulting services on the topic of “Transformation with Quality.”
